ITINERARY 5
Piz Uccello Route
The start of the trek for the ascent to Piz Uccello is from the center of San Bernardino: although there are no signs with the toponym of the mountain, it is sufficient to follow those for Cassina de Vignun and Hinterrhein. Without losing sight of the markers, we cross the locality Acubona continuing to Cassina de Vignun, a splendid alpine pasture at 2115 meters. Soon after, the trail to the summit begins, indicated by blue and white stakes (and cairns) along grassy slopes. Important to be careful in this section, as the trail is often unclear. Upon reaching an elevation of 2382 meters, the trail becomes clearly visible again but also becomes more rugged. We then continue on the route up the Foppa del Piz to the notch on the ridge between the south and north peaks. There are a few small first-grade passages, facilitated by chains to make them easier to pass. Now the most difficult section has passed, and crossing a long grassy slope, the summit is finally conquered. From here an exciting panorama opens up, with the Piz de la Lumbreida, the Pizzo Tambo, the blade of Piz Cavriola, the Piz de Mucia, Piz Moesola and the Rodond. After leaving a message in the summit book hidden under the little stone man we set off again for the return along the same route to Cassina de Vignun. From here you can choose whether to return by the same path as on the outward journey or take the one on the right that-passing Pian Lumbrif-brings you back to San Bernardino.
